HOW TO MEASURE THE SQUARE
FOOTAGE
OF YOUR WALLS ACCURATELY
KEY: Measure the Gross Square
Footage. Then deduct for doors, windows, mirrors, fireplaces,
etc. to calculate the Net Square Footage.
FORMULA (In inches): Perimeter
x Height ÷ 144 = Square Footage.
In our example the room is 14'3" X 15'1"
with a wall height of 7'9" (top of base board to bottom of
picture rail).
704 x 93 ÷ 144 = Gross sq ft.
65,472 ÷ 144 = Gross sq ft.
454.66 = Gross sq ft
Now figure your deductions using the formula...
A window 6' X 4'
Two doors 2'7½" X 6'8"
A book case 11'1" X 7'3"
A vent 1'3" X 9"
Using the key above, calculate the Net Square Footage...
+454.66 __Gross
sq ft.
-024.00 __-window sq ft.
-035.00 __-two doors sq ft.
-080.35 __-book case sq ft.
-000.93__--vent sq ft.
------------
+314.38__-Net
sq ft. __Round this number up to 315
sq ft.

If you understand this example, you can accurately
calculate the sq ft of a room with many deductions. Just take your
time and write it all down on a sheet of paper. Use a calculator
to double check your math. Take accurate measurements and don't
rush.
